Baumarten

Baumarten, the European pine marten, is the connoisseur's fur and the least recognised piece in our catalogue. It is as soft as sable and lighter than mink, with a natural amber-brown lustre that catches light without announcing itself. It sits between mink and sable in both hand and price, and it is the fur we suggest to clients who already own mink and want something almost nobody will identify on sight. Every Casiani Baumarten piece is hand-matched and built in Greece.

FAQ

What is Baumarten fur?

Baumarten is the German name for the European pine marten, a close relative of the sable. The two animals belong to the same genus, which is why the furs share so much: fine silky hair, a warm brown ground and a natural sheen. Baumarten is sometimes sold as baum marten or pine marten.

How does Baumarten compare to sable?

It is the closest thing to sable at a materially lower price. Baumarten is slightly less dense and lacks sable's distinctive silver guard hairs, but the softness and the fluid way it moves are strikingly similar. Where sable-trimmed pieces in our catalogue run to a median around $19,790, Baumarten-trimmed pieces sit closer to $6,435.

Why is Baumarten so rarely seen?

Supply is limited and the name is unfamiliar outside the trade, so most retailers do not stock it and most buyers never encounter it. That obscurity is precisely its appeal for clients who would rather not wear something instantly recognisable.

Is Baumarten warm and hard-wearing?

Yes to both. It has the dense underfur that makes marten-family furs insulate so well, and it is more robust than its softness suggests. It is lighter than mink for comparable warmth, which makes it comfortable for long wear.
