Rex Rabbit

Rex rabbit was bred in France in the 1920s specifically for its coat. A natural mutation left it with almost no protruding guard hairs, so what remains is a short, dense, perfectly even pile with a genuine velvet feel. It is the closest thing to chinchilla at a fraction of the price, and it is the lightest fur we stock, which makes it the easiest to wear casually. Every Casiani rex rabbit piece is cut and finished by hand in Greece.

FAQ

Is rex rabbit a good first fur?

It is the one we most often suggest for a first piece. It is the most affordable fur we carry, the lightest to wear, and its velvet texture is genuinely appealing rather than a compromise. It lets you find out how you actually feel about wearing fur before committing to mink or sable.

How does rex rabbit compare to chinchilla?

They look and feel similar because both lack prominent guard hairs, and rex is often described as a chinchilla substitute. Chinchilla is denser, lighter for its warmth and considerably softer, which is why it costs many times more. For everyday wear the difference is smaller than the price gap suggests.

How long does rex rabbit last?

Less than mink. The short dense pile is more prone to wear at friction points like cuffs, seat and under the arms, so a rex piece worn hard every day will show it within several seasons rather than several decades. Treated as an occasional coat and stored properly, it lasts considerably longer.

Is rex rabbit warm?

Warm for its weight, and pleasant in mild to moderate cold. It has less loft than mink or fox, so it is not the choice for deep winter, but it is comfortable across a much wider temperature range precisely because it is not heavy.
