How it runs
You send the shape, the fur, how you want it worn and your measurements. We come back with a specification, the pelts we would use and a price. Nothing is cut until you have agreed all three. Six to ten weeks, depending on the fur.
Want cloth on the outside and fur only at the collar or lining? See men's cashmere coats with fur trim.
FAQ
Can men wear fur coats?
Yes, and for most of recorded history men wore them more than women did. The fur-lined overcoat was ordinary winter dress for men across Europe and North America until the middle of the twentieth century. Fashion moved; the garment did not change. Short-piled mink and flat swakara read as texture. Fox reads as fur from across a street.
What is the warmest fur for a men's coat?
Russian sable for warmth per unit of weight. Mink for warmth you can wear every day without thinking about it. Any fur is warmer worn fur-in, because the pelt then traps air against you instead of facing the wind.
How much does a men's fur coat cost?
Price follows the number of skins and their grade, so a vest and a full-length sable coat are not in the same conversation. A mink jacket is the most affordable real entry. We quote per commission and give you the number before you commit.
What is the difference between swakara and Persian lamb?
None. Swakara is the trade name for the karakul lamb pelt from southern Africa; Persian lamb is the older English name for the same material. Both mean the flat, tightly patterned fur with the watered-silk marking.
Do I have to come to Greece?
No. Most commissions are measured remotely: we send instructions, you send numbers and a few photographs. You are welcome at the Kastoria workshop if you are travelling, and a fitting in person will always beat one at a distance.
Where does the fur come from?
Every pelt is bought at auction, not from dealers. Mink and fox come from European farms audited under WelFur, through Saga Furs and Kopenhagen Fur. See Who Checks Our Fur, and ask us for the auction, sale date and lot of the skins in your own coat.
